Butterfly Bench I & II
Oak Seating Sculpture -Sculptural Bench Forms
Fresh Air Sculpture Show, Quenington (2004 -2005)
Butterfly Bench I & II mark an exploration into the relationship between carved timber and natural movement. Working with solid oak, the forms are shaped using a bandsaw and compass plane to capture the movement of a butterfly in flight.
The benches sit between sculpture and furniture. The carved seat suggests motion and lightness, while the supporting elements anchor the work in the landscape. Installed at Quenington, the pieces respond to their setting and to the rhythm of natural growth.
