Corset Pedestal

Structural Form Study

This work emerges from an early investigation into the structure and function of the corset. Historically designed to shape and support the body, the corset redistributes load through a system of tension and compression. This study translates those principles into a constructed form.

Thin plywood elements are cut and assembled to allow the surface to curve and tighten around an internal structure. The work sits between object and prototype, where techniques of joining and tension begin to establish a relationship between furniture construction and tailoring. It forms the starting point for later seating works, where these ideas develop into a direct engagement with the body.
